The main objective of this operation is to research and implement modern specialised technology for calf rearing and finishing on Polish farms (new technology). The operation will consist in the introduction of innovative, improved technology related to health prevention, nutrition and animal welfare monitoring, which will contribute to improve the efficiency of calf rearing and obtain a standardised, reproducible final product through innovative changes in the final phase of cattle fattening. The operation will carry out two tasks: calf rearing and finishing fattening. The marketing of calves from dairy cows for fattening in Poland is done through intermediaries. A small, if traceable, proportion of farmers buy calves directly from other farmers. The predominant model is the rearing of calves for own consumption. The farmer who purchases the calves, rears them and then grazes them to slaughter weight. We are not aware of farmer-run calf rearing facilities for sale for fattening.

■ Research and implementation of mo dern specialist calf rearing and final fat tening technologies on Polish farms. ■ Verification of usefulness of ear bio sensors for calves. ■ Introduction of innovative, improved technology related to preventive he alth care, nutrition and animal welfare monitoring, which will contribute to improving the efficiency of calf rearing and obtaining a standardised, repeata ble final product through innovative changes in the final stage of cattle fat tening.

The planned operation envisages the introduction of a number of technological and organisational product innovations aimed at reducing calf mortality in the first rearing period to 5%, limiting the use of antibiotic therapy in favour of disease prevention and prophylaxis, to strengthen cooperation between calf suppliers (mainly dairy farmers) and promote the implementation of vaccination systems for cows from which calves will be sent for fattening, to improve production indicators - daily gains, feed utilisation, implementation of systems for the ongoing monitoring of animal welfare and the microclimate of the facility. In terms of the final finish, the operation will contribute to the implementation of innovations obtaining a more standardised and reproducible final product, improvement of growth rates depending on the animal genotype from 1300-1700g/day, reduction of antibiotic treatment in favour of disease prevention, reduction of falls in this period to 2%. Number of enterprises implementing innovations -10 pcs. Number and type of innovations: animal health and welfare monitoring system - product and organisational innovation, microclimate monitoring system in livestock buildings - product innovation, development of feeding measures for calves and adult cattle - product innovation, reduction in the use of antibiotic therapy - organisational innovation, system for shortening the supply chain - organisational innovation. In addition, manuals for calf rearing and finishing will be produced - pcs. 2, Popular science publications popularising project results - 10; Implementation of calf rearing and finishing methods - 10 items.
